There are too many young people in Buffalo who go to school but don’t have parents who are involved with their schooling. Why is it important for parents to be engaged in their child’s schooling?
If a parent doesn’t care then the kid doesn’t care and that’s a disaster. The kid may show up to school but not learn anything! He or she might just cause problems for the teacher and classmates and that is no good. The youth is our future, and children who are active in school benefit the community as a whole.
A parent is the one person in a child’s life who means more to them than anyone else– even more important than teachers. So if a parent has zero interest in their child’s schooling, then that kid is doomed to fail in school, which puts the odds against them in life.
When Parents Are Active in their Child’s Education
On the other hand, when parents or guardians play an active role in their child’s education, they’re helping set that child up for both academic and social success. The kid will want to attend school and want to achieve good grades because someone acknowledges them for doing well. Furthermore, parents can encourage a kid’s progress, helping with homework and making sure projects get finished on time and in their entirety. Parents can also help kids sort out how to deal with difficult people or situations at school so that their behavior is decent– instead of the kind of behavior that would get them suspended.
MVP of Buffalo exists to “take back our community.” It’s adults in Buffalo who recognize that the youth matter, and need help. Rather than violence being the go-to narrative for many young kids, especially boys, what if peace was the norm? What if parents and others, like volunteer mentors from MVP, helped guide children through their school years so they were encouraged and supported? Imagine how Buffalo could change for the better.
Parents, if you are overwhelmed and feel like you need some help figuring out how to get more involved with your child’s schooling, call MVP of Buffalo at 585-564-6687.
